About the Medina Lab
The Medina Lab has been studying cnidarian-algal-microbial interactions for several years. We use a combination of ecological, physiological, and genomic techniques to understand these interactions. Our species of study are Cassiopea xamachana (the Upside-down Jellyfish) and the dominant reef-building Orbicella coral species complex, along with other important Caribbean coral species.
Our recent projects address a series of evolutionary questions using a comparative multi-‘omics approach. We are involved in the Global Coral Microbiome Project and the Earth Microbiome Project 500 to describe the microbial communities of several coral species around the world.
