Dr. Medina’s COP16 Bitácora – Cali, Colombia
Arriving in Cali, the city felt alive with energy. A sense of urgency was in the air as global leaders, activists, and experts gathered for COP16. As part of the Penn State delegation, I felt a deep sense of pride to represent not only my institution, my country Colombia, but also the global effort to address climate change.
Cali’s vibrant culture, with its music, dance, and warmth, set the stage for what promised to be an eventful week.
Screening of Atlantis – A Powerful Reflection on Climate Change
One of my favorite moments was hosting a special screening of Atlantis, a poignant documentary about the devastating effects of climate change on coral reefs. The film, narrated by Peter Coyote, directed by Justin Smith and David Baker, was both visually stunning and emotionally gripping. It highlighted the fragile relationship between marine ecosystems and climate change, showcasing both the beauty of coral reefs and their impending demise.
The atmosphere in the room was electric with the presence of the directors and Jalimer Caraballo, the composer of the film’s theme song “El Planeta”. It was a perfect blend of science, art, and culture. Opening a conversation highlighted how urgent and collaborative the fight against climate change needs to be to preserve these vital ecosystems. It was an inspiring moment to witness.

Art, Science, and Activism: Inspiring Climate Action at COP16
At COP16, the convergence of art, science, and activism created a powerful moment of reflection and action. The Art and Science Expo served as a vibrant reminder of the role creativity plays in climate awareness, with music and visual art sparking urgent conversations about the planet’s future. These works, blending artistic expression with scientific insight, acted as calls to action. Outside, Pacific activists brought the reality of climate change to the forefront, demanding stronger commitments and highlighting the vulnerability of their region. Together, art, science, and activism at COP16 underscored the need for global unity and immediate climate action.
